Chapter 0246
Liam POV
I stood in the dimly lit surveillance room, watching my siblings through the camera feeds Adam had set up throughout the house. A pang of jealousy twinged in my chest as I observed their relaxed friendship. "Bastard, make's it look so easy." I shared my uneasy thoughts with V.
"Our role is different we cannot forge close bonds but have to stand as the vigilant protector of the pack. Someone needs to ensure leadership over personal connections," he briskly reminded me. Still, the duality in our existence troubled me. I swallowed the bitterness, masking my envy of Chase's dual ability to connect while leading.
"Suck it up, buttercup." V's voice echoed in my mind, a constant presence that guided and yet challenged me. "Adam's paranoia has been getting worse since Lottie arrived." V observed, his tone laced with a mix of concern and disapproval. I nodded slightly, my gaze fixed on the screen, noting how Adam's eyes tracked Lottie-cold and guarded as if fearing she might crumble under the weight of his gaze. In these moments, I found solace, knowing my relationship with her held more warmth than Adam could muster. "For now, we need to let him. He's lost enough, and if this makes him feel safe..." I sighed softly, the screens reflecting in my eyes.
"But recording someone in private is not healthy, Liam. We should tell Lottie," V insisted, pushing back against the boundaries Adam had set. I sighed, a part of me agreeing with V.
"We will, in time. But right now, let's focus on what's unfolding." I muttered, knowing that now was not the time.
As the situation escalated and Adam left the house to get Lottie out of the car, a sense of urgency washed over me.
"Are they taking her?" I growled, deciding to join them and find out what was happening for myself. I rushed out of the surveillance room, taking the stairs three at a time, my hand gripping the bannister tightly to keep me upright. Pushing the door open, I sighed, seeing I had arrived just in time to see Lottie agreeing to get out of the car. I was thankful to be avoiding the clash I feared but was fully prepared to engage in to protect her from their reckless plans.
"I knew she wasn't going because there was no way Lottie was fitting in the back of Chase's dumb car. The fucker had truly thought that if he got a 1967 Chevy Impala like Dean Winchester from that show he was addicted to, he would attract the ladies like that fictional character did. But honestly, given his size and fat head, he just looked like a pimp on the prowl.
"Dick." I scoffed internally, amused at Chase's attempts to emulate his television idol, which only made him appear more ridiculous.
"Can you hear anything?" V's voice cut through, strained with effort.
"You're the one with super hearing, dumb ass." I shot back, though a smirk played on my lips as I caught fragments of their plan to extricate Knox from his latest debacle.
"Ugh, this is ridiculous.," V relentlessly moaned in our mindlink. "She needs to be controlled, Liam," he pressed his voice a mix of worry and sternness.
"I know, V." I could feel the weight of his expectations bearing down on me. "But controlling her isn't the answer. She's not just some unruly pup."
"She's a leader, or will be one day. She must conduct herself with more dignity," V lectured, his tone growing harsher.
"I know," I replied, my frustration mounting. "But she's still learning, V. She's been thrown into this without preparation."
"She is precious and should remember that," V added softly, a rare hint of fear bleeding through his usually stoic demeanour. He was scared to lose her, a sentiment he cloaked under layers of cold logic but was palpable in every word.
"She doesn't think she's precious," I countered, feeling a pang of sadness for my sister's self-doubt.
"Well, whose fault is that?" V sneered, his disdain for Knox and Kane clear. "They are a waste of space." The bitterness in V's tone resonated with my own feelings, but I pushed them aside.
"Let's not dwell on them now. We need to support her. She will learn, V. She's new to this role she's been thrust into. She doesn't want to rule or be superior; she just wants happiness," I reasoned, trying to bridge the gap between our duty and her desires. V's laughter, a resounding, rumbling echo in my mind.
"Happiness is not something Lycan
royalty often have the luxury to hold onto," he reminded me. The memory of a pretty redhead flashed through my thoughts, a brief respite in my otherwise stern existence, but I quickly dismissed it for her safety and my own. The fleeting moments of what could be a simpler life vanished as quickly as they came, reminding me of the sacrifices demanded by my birthright. Vnovelbin
announced himself in my memories with a rumbling laugh that bounced around the confines of my mind.
It was too late; the weight of V's words hung heavy in the air. I, too, yearned for a taste of that elusive happiness, but after what our uncle
had done to Adam's
family believing Adam would
choose family over duty-I couldn't risk the same mistake. I kept these thoughts to myself, knowing that they were part of a deeper, darker story that Lottie and the others
weren't ready to hear yet.
As I stepped closer to Lottie, the pain radiating off her was palpable, almost heart-wrenching. V whined loudly in my head, his discomfort mirroring mine.
"She shouldn't be hurting like this," V
muttered, his tone laced with rare
concern. "Get the car keys," He suddenly suggested, although we both knew, it was no suggestion; if did not he would simply see control and do it anyway. The fucker liked to get his way just as much as did. But his actions were sharply deviating from our plan to 'simply talk things through.' The idea was so contrary to his usual stance that it almost made me laugh.
"Why?" I asked, amusement colouring my tone.
"We're taking her to Knox," V grunted, his voice a blend of frustration and resolve. "To show her they're a waste of her time." But I knew better. V's gruff exterior hid a deeper compassion. He wanted to stop her suffering, to ease the pain that was so visibly eating at her. "You're getting soft, V," I teased, feeling a rare moment of camaraderie with my inner wolf.
"Just drive, Liam," V retorted, but I could sense the smile he couldn't hide. It was clear we both understood the necessity of our next move for her, for us, for the integrity of the pack.
