Chapter 52
Vale stared at the floor. I could pick up his heartbeat as it raced but nothing showed it in his features. His face was blank as he bore holes into the floor. Looking back at the phone, I saw Simon also watching intently. Every once in a while, he would look up over the phone.
"So, what's next?" I finally broke the silence and asked.
Simon's head locked back onto me. "Well, right now, we are tracking down the three SUV's that drove off in the beginning of the video. They basically played the cup game and mixed together, then went separate ways. Pipsqueak is tracking their movements through as many cameras as she can get ahold of. We took one of the SUV's and she is still tracking the other two."
I nodded. "Tracing where they went narrows our search considerably." He nodded as well but I saw his lips press together. "What?"
Simon glanced at Vale who still hadn't moved. "All that footage is from a week ago. We are days behind them at this point. I don't want to say that we might not even know if he is still here but..."
Taking a deep breath, I looked down. He was right. If one of those SUV's pulled up to the airport or train station we would be fucked. The next worst case is that we found where they were keeping him but they had already moved. We would have no information on how to track them down from there. It was a mess. A right fucking mess.
"How is..."
Simon shook his head, giving me a warning with his eyes. "We will keep you posted if anything else happens. For now, updates might be slow. Pipsqueak is going as fast as she can through tracking the SUV's but it's going to take time."
"Try to get some rest. You look like a damn zombie."
Simon chuckled. "Try looking in the mirror, Beta. We are working our way through this one since it's mostly on the back country roads without cameras. We aren't going to stop. Trust me."
"I do. We'll be waiting for your updates."
He nodded and the phone hung up. I set my phone down on the bed behind me. Looking at Vale, I placed a hand on his shoulder and he jumped, forgetting someone else was in the room. His eyes turned glossy.
"What am I going to do, Hector? I can't lose him. I can't..." I saw him swallow hard.novelbin
"We will figure this out. Like I said, they want him alive. They could have killed him right there and there was nothing stopping them. I don't think they are trying to use him against you either."
Vale looked at me, confused. "Why? He's my mate."
"Right, but we didn't officially announce your connection. They might have taken him for being an Alpha or in association with our pack. It's taken us a week to get this information. They didn't send out a ransom or contacted us in any way for what they want. It doesn't seem like it's a set up for getting something from you as the king."
"Then why..."
My eyes met the floor. "I..."
"Hector, spit it out."
Looking Vale in the eyes, I hardened by heart and took a breath. "They might not only be taking children, Vale. He's a strong Alpha with bloodlines dating back to the creation of werewolves."
Any color that maybe was still on his face brought by the tears shinning in his eyes disappeared. His shaking came back and he started to shake his head. "No...no...that would be...I..."
There was a knock on the door and High Councilor Mark opened up the door without even waiting for an answer. His eyes caught us and they widened. "I'm sorry. I should have waited. I'm interrupting something."
Vale took a deep breath. "No, it's fine Mark. How can I help you?"
Mark looked suspicious and if he had any sense of dignity or brains, he would have said it wasn't worth it. He would have turned his ass right around and shut the door behind him. Apparently, High Councilor Mark had no such sense.
“Alpha Niles would like to speak with you in regards to the front lines. In the next week, he wants to transfer over there for a couple days. There is word going around that the witches are setting up something big by the end of the week."
Vale looked at me and closed his eyes, taking yet another deep breath. "Understood. We can head over there in the next few days. I'll chat with you about the details and what you would have Hector and I take part in."
Mark nodded and regarded the both of us before finally turning around, closing the door behind him. I rolled my eyes and shook my head. "Back in my day..."
"...when the wheel was invented..."
I glared at Vale. "...people had the sense to read a room and leave when they weren't wanted."
Vale chuckled. "Not any of these assholes here, that's for sure."
Signing, I asked, 'What are you going to do about the Alpha and the Beta?'
His lips pursed and he signed back. 'At the very least, the two of them will pay for their crimes. No matter the reason because nothing could justify what they have done.'
'Will you have another Alpha take over?'
I saw a flash of understanding and slight surprise. He hadn't really thought that far out yet. But if the pack wasn't to be disbanded and they ended up being the victims, it would be another situation of the Darkry pack. We wanted to avoid that at all costs.
He narrowed his eyes and then they widened. "I have an idea. An old friend, well, an old friend of my moms, her son...I think I can call him and talk to him. I trust him. He and his mate don't have a pack."
"But he's an Alpha?"
Vale nodded slowly. "It's someone my mom has kept in touch with over the years. Her son was the first born of the late fake Alpha King."
My eyes widened and stood up straight. “And you trust him?"
He nodded. “He wasn't raised by the Alpha King. He was kicked out, well, his mom was kicked out when she told the Alpha King she was pregnant. Evan is a strong Alpha but he's been living pack-less ever since he was born. Rarely do packs like two Alpha's of different decent on the same territory."
"If you trust him...then it sounds like a good opportunity for him."
"He and his mate live in Kentucky right now, I think? They have a pup, as well. So let's see if I can convince him."
We lapsed into a silence for a while. I was about to say something when Vale shook his head.
"Don't...Hector. I can't...I have to focus. If I dwell on it for too long, I'm going to lose my mind. Clinging to the fact that he is alive is all I can do. We have to save those kids. Have to stop this war that could kill more and have ripple effects across the world. I have to be King." He stood up and headed to the door.
"Vale, wait..."
He shook his head and slammed the door after him. I listened as he walked down the hall, not going into his room.
'He's probably going for a run.' Rydere sighed.
'I'm worried about him. We've seen this before. This decent into madness. Logan had it but this time, Vale knows Ezekiel has been taken.' Rydere brushed against my consciousness, taking control of my body for a moment. He walked over to the window and looked out. 'As much as I am worried for Ezekiel and for Vale, I'm also worried about our love. She has been working so hard to keep anything bad from happening and now...' 'To what lengths is she willing to go to get him back? To save Vale from the pain that her and Logan went through?' I paced the back of my mind. Rydere nodded as he caught of glimpse of white fur out in the forest. He sighed and shook his head. Retreating back, I took over and crossed my arms over my chest. We didn't need this now. There was too much going on. I'd take a quick and easy battle over all this shit any day.
'We're getting too old for this.' Rydere snickered in the back of my mind. Far enough away where I couldn't swat at him. 'Thanks, yah mangey mutt.'
Vale was getting more and more agitated as the days went by. His temper was quick and there was a few times Naresh had taken over just to get through the day without killing anyone. Suddenly, the Alpha and Beta had a ton of things for us to do and were keeping us busy, as well as a keen eye on us. We couldn't even sign any more. Vale had to resort back to mind link. Being King let him mind link with any wolf but it was a pain because it didn't feel natural while speaking back and forth.
Every so often, he would check in to see if we had any news on Ezekiel but each time I told him no. It was the truth. I texted Simon and even Bryan but they just kept saying they were working on it. They managed to cross off two of the SUV's but the third one was getting hard to track and it was taking days. Days that continued to bother Vale and make everything worse.
He was still in contract with the vampire High Councilor members who were with the other side. They were trying to delay the fight as much as possible but Vale still hadn't come up with a good plan to get the kids out. I had no idea what do in regards to it but now we were running out of time. The head witch was told that we had located the children and as much as she was willing to give us time to get them out safely, her patience was running thin.
It was coming up on a week since I got here and I leaned against the wall. I was worried. Worried about Vale, worried about Auri, about those poor kids under us. Worried we would be too late for them or for Ezekiel. Vale probably felt like he was choosing between Ezekiel's life and the kids life. Even though that wouldn't have been the case. The kids needed us now but without a third here, it was harder to create a plan.
My door slammed open and shut in one movement, Vale storming in. Eyes widening, I watched as he stormed up to me.
"Give me your phone."
"What? Vale what are you..."
He growled and I saw his control slipping. "Give me your fucking phone, Hector. I can't deal with this. They won't fucking answer my calls. Give me your damn phone."
"Vale, they don't have any more information. We need to focus on our task and they need to be able to focus on theirs.”
“A fucking week, Hector! A week! He's been gone for two fucking weeks and they still haven't found him! It's not a damn needle in a haystack!"
I growled back at him. “No, it's just a werewolf on the fucking pl!"
Vale's eyes fell back to their usual deep amber color, surprised I raised my voice at him.
"I understand you upset, Vale. I know this is your mate. I know that and I know how much it hurts."
"No, you fucking don't! You don't have a..."
Before he finished his sentence, I punched him in the ribs. He bent over, grabbing his side, trying to take a breath after I just knocked it out of him. "You listen here, pup, and you listen well. Anything you could possibly image going through with your mate, I promise you I have felt it over the years. I know you're in pain but you need to get your fucking head on straight, Vale. You said you were King and that you needed time to formulate a plan but you've been focusing on Ezekiel."
I took a deep breath and pulled out my phone. "I will give you this on one condition that once you call them, once they answer, you will give me the plan to save those kids. Do you understand?"
Vale looked up at me. I knew he was still pissed but at least he seemed more rational about it. "Fine. Just give me the fucking phone."
