Chapter 20 The Only Hope
Michael was losing his mind, trying to come up with a plan.
He knew those creepy knocks from the phone would definitely get that old man's attention.
And once he showed up, it was game over.
Forum posts, spooky stories, audio files, the knocking old man, and that phone call.
All these things were bouncing around in Michael's head, making a mess. He saw a pattern but couldn't figure out the rest.
This was his first ghost encounter, no experience at all. Getting this far was already a big deal. He wasn't Henrik, who acted like he had a crystal ball.
"Wait, Henrik, the future." Michael's face lit up. "That parchment."
He quickly pulled out a stack of dark brown parchment from his pocket.
"Michael, look over there." David's voice was shaky as he pointed towards the school.
Michael looked up and felt a chill run down his spine.
A few hundred feet away, a thick darkness was creeping in, swallowing everything. The ground was decaying, trees were withering, cement was getting moldy, and streetlights were rusting.
An old man covered in corpse spots was walking stiffly towards them, step by step.
"Damn it, he's here already?" Michael's heart raced.
"Michael, what do we do now? Are we gonna die?" David was almost crying. "I don't wanna die. I'm still so young. Michael, do something. Henrik said you'd be amazing in the future. You gotta have a plan, right?" "Are we trapped here?" Sophia, clutching his arm with pale hands, looked terrified.
Viktor, seeing the darkness closing in, started trembling and backing away, trying to escape the school. But when he turned around, he saw the same darkness closing in behind him.
They were surrounded with no way out.
Michael ignored them for now. He quickly opened the parchment, searching for some crucial info.
On the parchment, a clear line of text appeared, "At 5:00 AM on June 22nd, the Ghost Realm appeared before us again. Yeah, that ghost has returned."
"At 5:30 AM on June 22nd, we all died. None of us survived."
"I am Michael. If you are reading this, I am already dead."
"You wrote us to death? There must be a way out. When I got dragged into the bathroom earlier, that old man didn't follow. I need to know why. If you don't tell me now, I'll bury you." Michael said, with a hint of threat. The parchment seemed to hear him, and the text started to blur. Finally, all the text disappeared and a new line appeared.
"At 9:00 PM on June 21st, I was dragged into the bathroom by a ghost. I didn't die because there was an even scarier ghost in the bathroom. It was another Ghost Realm. I saw some horrifying things, but I didn't realize it at the time." "At 9:30 PM on June 21st, I got lost in the bathroom, but that old man came to the bathroom door. He was knocking, looking for me. However, I didn't hear it. Maybe that's why I escaped certain death."
Michael was stunned when he read this.
Could it be that when he was lost in the bathroom earlier, that old man was knocking on the door outside?
Soon, more text appeared on the parchment.
"After that incident, I figured the Ghost Realm was the key to making it out alive. If I could tap into the Ghost Realm, I might have a shot. After all, I'm a ghost now too. Nikolai was right, only a ghost can handle another ghost. Only another Ghost Realm can escape a Ghost Realm."
"At 5:15 AM on June 22nd, the old man showed up. I tried to use the Ghost Realm but failed. My power wasn't enough."
"At 5:30 AM on June 22nd, we all died."
Michael's heart pounded as he read this.
Even though the ending was still death at 5:30, he saw a tiny glimmer of hope.
The Ghost Realm!
Yeah, the place where this old man showed up was a Ghost Realm. Now, he was a Ghost Handler too.
Why couldn't he use the Ghost Realm?
If Nikolai were here, he'd probably laugh at Michael's idea because not every ghost could have a Ghost Realm. Ghosts with Ghost Realms were rare and super scary.
"I gotta try. There's no other way." Michael gripped the parchment tightly. "Tell me how to use the Ghost Realm," he demanded.
More text quickly appeared on the parchment.
"Michael, who are you talking to? Look, everything around us is going nuts. What do we do now?" David was crying, counting on Michael to save him, terrified of hearing bad news.
"Shut up. I'm thinking. Give me a sec." Michael's tone was urgent as he glanced around.
The old man was still coming, now less than three hundred feet away.
They were all freaking out, and so was he.This is from NôvelDrama.Org.
Nobody wanted to die.
More text appeared on the parchment, "At 5:20 AM on June 20th, after my first failure, I figured it was because the ghost in me hadn't fully awakened. If I could open a few more eyes, it might work." The number of eyes?
Michael didn't have time to think. There were only ten minutes left until 5:30. He didn't want to die here.
Immediately, the flesh on his arm split open, revealing five blood-red eyes.
Each eye glowed faintly red.
"At 5:22 AM, I decided to increase the number of eyes." The text on the parchment appeared.
"I need a method!" Michael growled at the parchment, "If I die, you'll be lost too. You didn't want me to ditch you before. If I die, do you think someone else will pick you up?"
The text on the parchment blurred again, and finally, a new line appeared, "At 5:24 AM, after my attempt, I ate one of the eyes on my arm, successfully increasing the number of eyes. With six eyes, I successfully used my own Ghost Realm. I was becoming more like a ghost."
"At 5:30, I didn't open the Ghost Realm. We all died."
"Eat the eye?" Michael murmured, in disbelief.
Michael looked at the five creepy blood-red eyes on his arm, stunned.
But seeing that last line, he knew he had no choice.
At this moment, darkness enveloped them, and the surroundings quickly dimmed. The old man was now less than 60 feet away.
As the darkness closed in, the door of the security room not far away slowly opened, and a pale hand reached out.
Outside the fence behind them, a blurry figure shrouded in darkness slowly approached.
Nearby, several faint phone lights pierced through the darkness, as if some classmates who had been separated earlier were approaching step by step with their phones.
Michael, David, Viktor, Sophia, Aria, and Marco were all surrounded by ghosts.
