Chapter 18 Reasoning
Michael dropped his phone and shot a nervous glance at the small grove behind him.
That old man was seriously freaky.
No matter how many times he ran into him, even from a distance, it always gave him the creeps.
'Henrik's gotta be toast by now, right?'
Michael's eyes darted around. 'We gotta bail, like, now. If that old man catches us again, we're toast. Doesn't matter if it's David, Sophia, or me, we're all screwed.'
'So what if I became a ghost tamer? Didn't Nikolai bite it 'cause he overused the ghost's power?'
And Nikolai's death? Totally 'cause this old ghost was scarier than that Ghost Baby.
The Ghost Baby couldn't even handle this old man.
Soon, David saw Michael coming back and let out a relieved sigh. "Michael, where'd you go? Did you find Henrik? There are ghosts in the school, and you're the only one brave enough to wander around. I didn't even dare to move an inch." "Yeah, I reached Henrik, but he probably ran into a ghost," Michael said. "And I saw that old man who knocked on the classroom door earlier. That area's a no-go now. We gotta get outta here, like, ASAP. If we stick around, who knows how many more will bite the dust." As he spoke, everyone went quiet, their faces full of fear and regret.
It was only been a few hours since the classroom haunting started, and they'd been on the run ever since. Out of more than forty classmates and teachers, only a few were still kicking, the rest vanished. And everyone knew what it meant to disappear in a haunted school.
This wasn't some dream or a movie; it was a real haunting, and people were dying.
"Michael, thanks for getting us out. Without you, we'd be goners."
"Yeah, thanks. And sorry about before. When Henrik shoved you into the bathroom, we didn't stop him. Later, we realized Henrik was a jerk, leaving many classmates behind to slow down the ghost." "That guy's a total tool." Several classmates behind him chimed in, cursing Henrik and apologizing to Michael.
"It's too early for thanks. We're still in the school, still in the Ghost Realm. Whether we make it out alive is still up in the air," Michael shook his head.
"Even though you're all wiped out, now's not the time to rest. I don't know much about the Ghost Realm, but we gotta try. Follow me and let's see if we can get out of this place."
He had become the leader among these people. After he finished speaking, those resting on the ground immediately got up.
"Out of more than forty people, only 13 are left. Who knows if it'll keep going. If I had known, I would've called in sick today," David said, feeling a bit agitated.
The others glanced at him, all lowering their heads without speaking, looking really down and out.
If they couldn't see any hope of survival, Michael believed they were close to a mental breakdown. He saw that some girls were already pale and talking to themselves. "Let's move." Michael couldn't worry about mental breakdowns now.
The question was whether they could leave here alive.
With him leading the way, no one worried about getting lost, and as they walked, they seemed to be moving further away from the Ghost Realm.
Even though the sky was still dark, they could see the road and the surrounding buildings.
Soon, they arrived at the school gate. The security booth was empty, and the road was eerily quiet.
The streetlights were off, and there were no cars passing by.
The surroundings were creepy, with no sound except for their own.
Michael glanced at the closed door of the security booth, super cautious. He didn't dare approach any door, fearing something terrifying might come out if he opened it. Looking at the creepy silence outside, Michael knew that even if they left the school, it wouldn't be any safer.
As long as they were still in the Ghost Realm, it was the same nightmare everywhere.
"What's up with outside? Why's it so dead? Usually, there are tons of parents picking up their kids around now," Aria said, curious and a bit freaked out.
Normally, the area outside the school was packed with people and cars. But now, it was just them.Belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - All rights reserved.
"I'll go check it out." David climbed over the fence and stepped onto the road.
David looked around and saw that the end of the road was swallowed by endless darkness, like the depths of hell.
The way they came was also covered in darkness.
"It's pointless. We can't walk out of here. Don't waste your energy," Michael said.
"So, are we stuck here? I don't wanna die," a girl immediately collapsed to the ground, tears streaming down her face.
Even though the other boys didn't collapse, their fear of death was written all over their faces.
"Michael, please, save us. I can't handle seeing any more ghosts," Sophia said, clutching his arm with pleading eyes. Michael fell silent for a moment. "Let me think."
He didn't plan to keep walking but sat on a stone to rest.
After running all the way, he was also exhausted.
Suddenly, he looked down at David's phone in his hand.
"Did you try calling for help before?"
"I tried. The call went through, but," a classmate said.
"Viktor Ivanov, but what?"
"There was no sound on the other end. I didn't dare to call again," Viktor said after a moment of silence.
The call went through, but there was no sound.
Michael was shocked. With ghosts around and such weird stuff happening, it was indeed scary to keep calling for help.
"But in the classroom, the calls could still go through. This weirdness started after we left the classroom," Aria suddenly reminded. "David called for an ambulance before." "Yeah, that's right," David nodded.
Shortly after leaving the classroom, considering the time, it should be when the Ghost Realm reappeared, which was when Michael reached the second-floor hallway, and the lights flickered and went out. "Let me try another number."
Michael suddenly thought of someone's number and decided to give it a shot.
He opened David's phone, logged into that forum, and then used the satellite phone Nikolai gave him to dial a number.
It was the number left by the 'Thunder King' on the forum.
He wanted to know if the Thunder King was in trouble. If he was, his phone might be in the hands of another Ghost Handler as a piece of evidence. After all, if there were cops like Nikolai handling supernatural cases, there might be others responsible for this case.
Let's give it a try.
The phone didn't lose signal; instead, it connected smoothly.
However, the situation was worse than he imagined.
The phone on the other end started ringing, but the sound echoed through the silent school, reaching everyone's ears. Although it wasn't loud, it was eerily clear.
Michael's hand froze as he made the call.
"His phone is in this school?"
He quickly stood up, looking around in fear, instinctively searching for the source of the ringtone.
The 'Thunder King' was an ER doctor in another city, hundreds of miles away, who got into trouble while online at home. If his phone's ringtone was here, it meant he was here, too. However, at this moment, the call was connected, but nobody spoke on the other end.
At the same time, the phone's ringtone echoing in the school also stopped.
At this moment, Michael saw a faint phone light on the third-floor window of a teaching building. He could vaguely see a blurry figure standing at the window, seemingly looking in their direction. "Damn it," Michael quickly hung up the phone.
