Chapter 99: Someone Else Knows About That Night
“Ugh, I’m so tired!” Lily groaned as she flopped on the couch in Bryan’s office the next day. She covered her face with her palm, trying to spit out the sun that was causing her headache.
“Well, that much is expected since you spent the whole night in an upper-class banquet; how was it?” Bryan replied without taking his eyes off the files he had been working on before she walked in.
“It was okay, not as lit as the one I used to host back then, but fair enough.” She replied with a shrug. “I made some amazing connections and I met some annoying people, but overall the purpose of going as Mark’s date was met, with a little more profit, might I add,” she added with a small chuckle as Rose’s annoyed face flashed through her mind.
“I take it you met a new opponent?” Bryan asked knowingly, and Lily chuckled.
“Do you take me for a troublesome person?” She asked with a raised brow, and Bryan scoffed.
“You and your mom have too much similarity for me not to know what that dreamy look on your face is. Who is it? Frederick or Rose?” Bryan asked.
“What if I say it’s both?” Lily replied, and she sat up and faced him. “They look like they were scheming something with me in the centre of it, and somehow I’m excited to see what exactly they are plotting,” she announced excitedly, and Bryan let out a sigh.
“You do you; I’ve got your back. It’s the least I can do as your uncle,” he announced, and Lily grinned.
“I’ll take you up on that offer when I need it; anyway, why did you ask me to come this early?” She asked, finally getting serious about the meet-up.
“I got the blueprint for the Roux family vault and all the other security details you wanted me to get,” Bryan announced, making Lily raise her brow in surprise.
“That’s faster than I thought; are they the real thing?” She asked and took the document he handed her.
“They are the real thing. I had to dig through my father’s private study to get them,” Bryan explained with a mischievous grin.
“Grandpa’s private study?” Lily asked, raising an eyebrow in surprise. “You mean the one that’s supposed to be completely off-limits? The one in his room? How the hell did you get in there?”
Bryan nodded, his grin widening. “The very same. But you know me-I’ve never been one to let a few rules get in the way of a good adventure. He’s a lightweight, so I had his new girlfriend get him drunk at the hotel while I raided his study,” he confessed. “Don’t worry, he won’t find out.”
Lily couldn’t help but chuckle at her uncle’s rebellious spirit. She carefully examined the blueprints and security details, her eyes scanning the intricate diagrams and notes. “This is incredible,” she murmured, tracing a finger over the plans. “With this information, we’ll have a much better chance of successfully infiltrating the vault.”
“That’s the idea,” Bryan replied, leaning back in his chair. “I figured the sooner you had this, the sooner you could start planning your next move.”
“You’re right about that,” Lily agreed, folding the papers and tucking them into her bag. “But before I dive into strategising, there’s something else I wanted to talk to you about.”
Bryan sat up straighter, his expression turning serious. “Of course. What’s on your mind?”
Lily hesitated for a moment before speaking. “It’s about Mom,” she began, her voice softening. “I know you two had your differences, but I was wondering if you knew anything about her past-specifically, why she insisted on marrying Henry despite knowing the things that would happen after.”Content © NôvelDrama.Org 2024.
Bryan let out a heavy sigh, his gaze drifting to the window as he contemplated Lily’s question. After a few moments, he turned back to her, his eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and regret.
“Your mother was always the rebellious one,” he said, a hint of nostalgia in his voice. “She chafed under the strict rules and expectations of our family, especially when it came to her role as a pawn in their power plays. She longed for a life where she could make her own choices and live on her terms.”
Lily listened intently, hanging onto every word as Bryan painted a picture of her mother’s past. She could see the parallels between her mother’s life and her own, understanding all too well the desire to break free from the constraints of their powerful family.
“But when she met your father,” Bryan continued, “everything changed. He was an outsider, someone who didn’t care about her family’s power or influence. He saw her for who she truly was and loved her for it. And that love gave her the courage to leave everything behind and start a new life with him-with you.”
“As for why she left despite knowing the consequences, I really don’t know. I guess she just wanted to be happy,” he added with a shrug, and Lily nodded.
“Thank you; I really appreciate you answering my questions,” she grinned.
“Now let’s talk about our fashion cooperation,” Bryan announced. Lily groaned, feeling extremely tired about leaving for work.
“William is tailing me, and the cooperation with you is a cover we have to keep pulling up,” he explained.
“Is he suspecting that you are here to take over the company from him?” She asked with a raised brow, and Bryan shrugged.
“I would not know; he’s been on edge lately. I asked my people to look into it, and I was told he’s been receiving threatening messages about the night you died,” Bryan breathed out, and Lily frowned.
“I didn’t do it. I’ve been busy with a lot of things that I haven’t been paying attention to; do you think someone else knows about that night?” Lily asked worriedly, and Bryan hummed.
“Honestly? I’m not really sure,” he replied. “Henry is not sloppy enough to leave a loophole for that kind of situation, and he wasn’t in a rush either. It’s either one of the maids that once worked close with you and your mother or your mother left a message for someone else,” he explained, and Lily sighed.
“Which one is more likely to happen?” She asked.
With pursed lips, Bryan looked out the window and breathed out, “The latter. Either way, someone else out there knows.”
Hearing his words, Lily grinned happily and said, “Let’s keep watching. I’m sure whoever they are, they have their plans for sending threat notes. I’m also quite curious about how Williams will react in such situations.”
