MISTAKE 43
Chapter 43: Ignoring Selene
“No, she followed me in when I walked into the house,” Jamgs quickly denied. If Wendy was intending to bully Selene today, he had to stay out of the way.
At his words, Wendy set her confused eyes on the redhead, Selene, who looked as though Wendy had slapped her. Selene’s eyes watered as though bullied.
“Young Lady, who might you be?” Wendy asked.
“I am Selene. I am…” She stalled, then became confused again as to what she was supposed to say. “A friend of Daniel,” she said.
James almost raised a brow at her words. Even though she looked confused, she still managed to seem shy at this moment. Those who didn’t know will think that she has some sort of unspoken relationship with Daniel.
“Selene…” Mrs. Shaw seemed to ponder, “You are Daniel’s assistant. The one who has a lot of gossip with my son? Some even called you his mistress.” Mrs. Shaw asked, and James almost coughed at Mrs. Shaw’s expression. Wendy was really keeping to her narrative that she did not
know Selene.
Selene, on the other hand, could barely keep her face straight.
“Wendy,” she started to say, but Wendy’s eyes made her shiver. “Mrs. Shaw, it is all a misunderstanding. We are at most just friends. My family company also had collaborations with Daniel’s company, and I work for him.” Selene was not sure why she needed to explain. Did Daniel’s mother hit her head and forget who she was?
“Is that so? This girl should have known my son is a married man. When people say such things, you should distance yourself to avoid misunderstandings,” Wendy said. “Then, why are you here?”

“I heard Daniel had divorced and came to check up on him,” Selene said softly. “Please do not misunderstand; those reporters are sprouting rubbish. I am not a mistress.”
Selene had been bothered at how much Wendy ignored her in the past. She had always hoped to get close to Daniel’s family, but his mother was always stoic and unmoved.
Mrs. Shaw sighed in fake relief at her words. Even the ants on the floor could tell she was not
relieved.
“It is good that it is just a misunderstanding, then. For a moment, I thought you were going to date my son now that he is single again and tarnish his reputation. It’s good.” Wendy said, and Selene’s face fluctuated between blue and black. Selene had fallen into a trap.
Selene’s face turned black when she realized what had happened. She hurriedly tried to explain, but Wendy turned away. Wendy was making her stance known, and Selene was uncomfortable.
“James, go
and ask Daniel down. It’s time he came down,” she instructed James, and he made to stand when he saw Daniel coming down the staircase.
Daniel saw that his mother had made a meal, and the table was getting set, so he walked over with hollow and red eyes. One look, and James could tell he had been crying. It made him slightly uncomfortable.
This was the most stable yet cold person he kriew, yet he cried because his wife left him? James swallowed his words and joined them in the dining room.
It seemed everyone had, for some reason, forgotten that Selene was in the room. Being ignored did not sit well with Selene, so she moved closer to Daniel and attempted to hold his hand.
This was an action she had tried many times but was usually met with his cold eyes till she took her hand off. But she was already used to it, so the action became unconscious. This time, though, when her hand touched his, he flung it away so instinctively that it hit the side of a nearby chair.
The sound of her hand hitting the chair was loud, drawing attention, including Daniel, who had flung it away in the first place.
He had not been paying attention when he walked into the living room; he had barely registered that James and some woman were in the living room. But when she touched him, he reacted instinctively. He turned as he heard the sound of her hand hitting a nearby chair to see Selene. Her eyes watered from the pain, but he felt nothing when he looked at her, not even
remorse.
“Do you have a habit of holding the hands of random people?” Daniel asked coldly, and she
felt even more wrong.
“I only meant to…” she started to say, but realized it was inappropriate for her to grab him.
