Chapter 1458
Skylar's face hardened as she stepped forward, her voice sharp. "Did you say something to Grandma?"
Joe regarded Edwin with a chilling glare.
After losing his memory, Joe felt that Edwin had become a stranger to him. Edwin's eyes darted nervously and said, "I didn't say much. I'm her son. What could a son say to his mother? I was just showing concern for her health.
"We haven't lived together for years, and I wanted to fulfill my duty as her son. Since you're here now, I'll take my leave. Please take good care of my mom."
He truly hadn't expected her health to deteriorate so rapidly. After all, he had only spoken a few careless words, and yet she'd fainted just like that. Edwin was unwilling to accept that Gloria had distanced herself from him over the years and looked down on him.
After hearing that Joe had returned recently, he felt an urge to move back to Pearlhall Residence to live with Gloria and Joe.
Although he had basked in the limelight of being a member of the Martin family outside, he increasingly sensed he shouldn't continue living aimlessly. He was plagued by nightmares every night, haunted by those he had bullied in the past. Over time, the fear had become overwhelming. He dreaded living alone.
Even when he brought women home, they would end up saying they couldn't be with him anymore the next day, claiming they had nightmares and found it too frightening.
"What exactly did you say?" Joe pressed coldly.
Edwin's face paled at the question. He had always feared Joe, and now that Joe had lost his memory, the distance between them was even greater. He couldn't bring himself to meet Joe's gaze. "Didn't I just say it? I didn't say anything! How have you two been taking care of my mom during this time? How did she end up in such a bad shape?"
Skylar took a deep breath, feeling no tolerance for Edwin. "You'd better pray Grandma is okay."
"I'm your elder. How can you speak to me like that?" Edwin's face flushed with anger.
Skylar was even more intolerable than a few years ago. She was completely disregarding him as her father-in-law.
"You know exactly what you've done. If anything happens to Grandma today, won't let you off easily," Joe declared, suddenly stepping in front of Skylar, his expression icy as he faced Edwin.
Edwin's face flushed with anger as he pointed a trembling finger at Skylar and then at Joe. "Y-You two! You have no manners!"
Gritting his teeth, Edwin felt a wave of guilt wash over him as he turned to leave.
At that moment, Edgar emerged
from the ward, his eyes puffy and red from crying. "Mrs. Martin Senior has held on, but her condition is very
bad. The doctor... the doctor says she only has a couple of days left."
With that, Edgar could no longer hold back his tears.
Skylar's mind went blank for a moment, her body instinctively leaning against Joe. "Is Grandma awake now?" she asked.
Edgar shook his head. "Not yet. She's still unconscious. The doctor can't determine when she might wake up."
Joe supported Skylar, looking down at her pale face. An intense pain surged through him as if something was gripping his heart tightly.
His grandmother was about to leave him. Suddenly, fragmented memories from his childhood flashed through his mind like a fast-forwarded movie.
Skylar quickly steadied her heavy emotions, noticing that something was off with Joe. She asked in a hoarse voice, "Are you okay?"
With red eyes, Joe looked at Skylar and gently brushed his hand against her cheek. "I need to check on Grandma."
He began to recall some of thenovelbin
hardships Gloria had faced when he
was young. He remembered how shameful Edwin had been and the despicable actions of Ernest and the others.
