Chapter 1611
Jamie watched as Ben's face darkened the instant he saw the man approaching them. Her suspicions were immediately aroused.
"I'm his personal secretary," Jamie said with a calm smile, deliberately clarifying the relationship. The implication was clear that he shouldn't falsely assume a close relationship.
Noah Lucas raised an eyebrow, a look of mild surprise crossing his face. "Oh? My brother hasn't won you over yet? My apologies! I thought you two were already..."
"This has nothing to do with you," Ben interrupted coldly.
Noah paused, his hands casually shoved into his pockets. The two men locked eyes, exchanging no words, yet the air between them grew thick with tension, brimming with unspoken hostility.
Noah's smirk dimmed slightly as he leaned back. "I can't compare to you. Dad poured his heart into trying to pull you into the company, but you stuck to your guns and insisted on being a lawyer. That kind of stubbornness? I could never match it." His words feigned admiration, but the provocation in his tone was unmistakable.
Ben's sharp gaze cut through him like ice. "What I choose to do is none of your concern."
With that, he turned on his heel and walked off. Jamie quickly followed.
Noah's voice, lazy yet pointed, trailed after them. "Miss Lewis, I look forward to seeing you again."
Once inside the car, Ben's frosty demeanor remained. Anyone could tell he was in a foul mood.
Guessing that the encounter had rattled him, Jamie offered a soft reassurance. "Ben, don't let it get to you."
Ben turned to her, his tone grave. "Jamie, avoid him if you ever see him again."
Jamie blinked, startled by his intensity.
"Did you hear me?" he pressed.
She nodded, and only then did his expression soften slightly.
Still, Jamie's mind was racing. The identity of the man seemed clear now. He must be the illegitimate son of the Lucas family that Ben had mentioned before.
Jamie didn't dwell on it too much, thinking Noah's presence wouldn't affect them since he wasn't involved in Lucas Corporation. Yet, fate proved her wrong.
The very next day, news broke. Noah
had joined the company as the new
vice president. The sudden appointment, even with Ben's established position, sent
swnovel
shockwaves through the office.
"Where did this new VP come from all of a sudden?" one employee murmured.
"Hasn't Ben been running the company just fine? I've never even heard of this guy before."
Some curious colleagues turned to Jamie. Flustered, she quickly shook her head. "I'm not sure either."
Thankfully, no one picked up on her unease.
While chatter about the new VP swirled around the office, Jamie felt a growing sense of dread. It was obvious to her who was behind this move.
Noah's sudden entry into thenovelbin
company, after staying out of it for so long, could only be orchestrated by one person, Mr. Lucas. First, he had undermined Ben's credibility as a lawyer. Now, he had brought in a rival to challenge his position.
Jamie's chest tightened at the thought of how this might affect Ben. If it were her, she would feel utterly betrayed.
Excusing herself from her colleagues, Jamie made her way to Ben's office. Outside, the heavy doors muffled the sound of voices, but she could still catch faint fragments.
Inside, Noah leaned against the
desk, his posture casual as if he owned the place. He glanced around
the office, a playful smirk tugging at his lips. "Nice office, huh?"
Ben set his papers aside, his voice cold and cutting. "Who gave you permission to barge in unannounced?"
"I'm the new VP," Noah said with a shrug. "Coming into an office like this isn't exactly a big deal, is it?"
"Get out," Ben ordered, his tone like steel.
Noah's grin widened, taunting. "Come on, big brother. We're family, no need to be so hostile. Dad always said he wanted us to get along, didn't he?"
Ben's dark eyes flashed with contempt, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "You really don't know what he wants?"
